WHAT IS A CLASS EXCAVATOR AND WHAT ARE SOME OF THE BENEFITS OF A WILCO MARSH BUGGIES’ CLASS EXCAVATOR?
A class excavator, also known as a digger, is a piece of heavy construction equipment comprised of a boom, a bucket, a dipper, and a cab located atop of a rotating platform known as a house, which contains a diesel engine. The house rests on top of an undercarriage outfitted with tracks, which are propelled by hydraulics. Class refers to the size of the excavator.
There are 3 classes: mini or compact; midi or mid-size; and standard or full-size.
Mini refers to excavators weighing between 0 and 6 metric tons. These compact pieces are made to go into tight spaces and small areas. They can even be hauled on the bed of a Class 1 or 2 truck, which does not require the driver to have a commercial driver’s license. An example of the best application for a mini is a sewerage project. Midi refers to excavators weighing between 6 and 10 metric tons. The midi has most of the capabilities of a full-size model but has the advantage of being compact enough to be easier to transport and have better job access. Standard size excavators weigh between 10 and 90 metric tons and represents the largest array of excavators available in the marketplace, with the majority being full-sized and full-featured. Excavators weighing between the range of 19-24 metric tons and 33-40 metric tons comprise the largest market share.
