Are Nutria Rodents Of Unusual Size?

NutriaIf you have children, you have most likely heard about the Rodents Of Unusual Size (ROUS). They appear in the movie 1987 “Princess Bride” and probably stand out as the types of monsters that could star in a Steven King novel.  These enormous rat-like creatures which live in the Fire Swamp definitely remind us of the Louisiana Nutria.

ROUS Size In Louisiana

In Louisiana, we may not have the fictional Fire Swamp, but we sure have plenty of wetlands. In the Louisiana wetlands, we have rodents that look a lot like the ROUS’s from the movie, but are a little smaller and cause a lot of damage to wetland growth.

Nutria, Rodent Of Unusual sizeA Little History Of Nutria In Louisiana

Nutria eat plants and grass. The animal can weigh up to 35 to 37  lb  and  grow up to 4 feet long. In the 1930s, they started escaping from Louisiana fur farms. They had been imported from South America for their fur. When the fur trade collapsed, some fur farmers released the invasive species and in the 1940’s some nutria escaped during a hurricane. They quickly populated Louisiana’s swamps and coastal marshes.

A Threat To Our Environment

The species poses a threat to the local environment. Nutria’s love making tunnels  (burrowing) that’s how they weaken drainage canals and levees in Louisiana. They also cause extensive damage to marsh vegetation since they tend to eat not just the leaves, but the entire plants. The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries estimates that nutria currently impact approximately 6,008 acres of wetlands. The department issues permits to hunt nutria and will even pay permit holders $5 per nutria tail.To learn more about the program and apply for a permit click here:  http://www.nutria.com/site11.php.
